Generational Overview: 2010 Survey Of Health Care Consumers
As part of its comprehensive analysis of U.S. health care consumers, the "2010 Survey of Health Care Consumers," from the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, examined generational attitudes and behaviors. The findings reveal that each generational group brings different ideas and attitudes to their personal medical care. Generation Y respondents regard themselves as comparatively well-insured, but admit they understand the American health care system less well than their older counterparts. They're not as concerned about security breaches in the sharing of medical information online, and are more trusting of government sources of health care information. Generation X respondents are least likely to give the U.S. health care system a grade of A or B, and lag behind the other generational categories when it comes to confidence in their ability to handle future health care costs. Baby Boomers are most inclined to travel outside their home turf for medical tests or procedures, but are wary of the online safety of their Personal Health Records (PHRs).Seniors understand how the health care system works more fully than other groups and are best-equipped to handle future health care costs. They are generally satisfied with their doctors, hospital care and insurance coverage, and are far less interested in patronizing a walk-in clinic, even if it means a savings of 50 percent. They are also the most likely to ask their doctors to prescribe generic drugs to save money.
