Interconnected power distribution networks are often reconfigured for effective coordination of their protection systems, lower cost of operation and construction, to facilitate efficient load transfer from one feeder to another under normal/abnormal conditions. In this paper a method for improving voltage stability in a power network comprising multiple lines & switches has been suggested, based on system reconfiguration approach. Out of a large number of feasible alternative combinations of lines and switches, attempt has been made to find out the best possible combination of these, resulting in highest voltage stability of the overall system. Genetic Algorithm based fast and efficient optimization methodology has been developed to obtain the global optimum voltage stability for best possible switching configuration.
