Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel WDM networking

This paper describes a SAN and LAN Extension Solution based on embedded WDM SFP transceivers from SmartOptics. An embedded WDM solution offers best price, reliability and simplicity compared to TDM or stand-alone WDM systems. A common task for IT specialists is the simultaneous transport of LAN connections (Gigabit Ethernet or 10G Ethernet) and SAN connections (1G, 2G, 4G and 10G Fibre Channel) between main and recovery sites. Whilst stand-alone WDM solutions solve the network task, they introduce very high equipment costs and reduce the overall system reliability. The new CWDM standard G.695 now allows users to integrate CWDM optics directly into their switches and routers and guarantees interopability between the WDMoptics. The modules meet the requirements of IEEE 802.3 Gigabit Ethernet standard and ANSI Fibre Channel specifications, and are ideal for interconnections in Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel environments. CWDM modules operate at nominal Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) wavelengths. There are eight center wavelengths available from 1471 nm to 1611. The T-3008 and T-3009 Mux/Demux Units are ideal for adding more capacity to an existing fiber network. By multiplexing 8 wavelengths, the capacity of the fiber will be increased significantly. The T-3009 has an upgrade port (1310 nm) enabling an additional 8 CWDM channels for further network upgrade.
