Cargo is goods and equipment that is transported for commercial reasons by truck, van, train, aircraft, or ship. Cargo agents are trained workers that assist transportation companies in the management of incoming and outgoing shipments. Cargo agents must have at least a high school diploma or GED. Most cargo agents learn their skills and duties throughout informal on the job training. They typically start out performing simple tasks such as checking items to be shipped and ensuring addresses are correct. Employment of cargo agents is expected to grow much faster than average for all professions, increasing 24% from 2008 to 2018. The growth of the economy and increase in cargo traffic will drive job growth.
