If you delegate work to a subordinate and that person fails to complete the task, both manager and employee look bad. Use a formal tracking system to keep track of assignments, due dates, and instructions. Many managers are turning to computerized programs to track projects. Do periodic "Sample checks." Take samples of the employee's work and make sure they are meeting the standards you set forth at the beginning of the project. If the problems continue, rescind the employee's authority to work on the task independently. It will still be up to the employee to complete the project - but he or she will work under your guidance and authority.
