Although direct attach and Storage Area Network (SAN) storage have long been popular options for database storage, accessing databases through an Internet based Network Attached Storage (NAS) has grown to be another popular storage option. Network File System (NFS) is the file-based IP protocol Oracle servers support to access file systems physically located on the NAS device. Many validated configurations are posted on Oracle's web site using a NAS configuration. In particular since the development of Direct NFS, when Oracle embraced NAS as a truly viable production alternative for both Windows and Linux/UNIX, its use is exploding.
