Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, like any enterprise email system, is a critical business application. Even short periods of unexpected downtime can have a serious impact on productivity, and the ability to back up or restore Exchange data quickly and consistently is vital. The challenges of backing up data within a limited time window, and the inability to back up open files or applications led to the development of snapshots. Snapshot technology enables a "snap" copy of data with minimal impact on production applications. Applications are paused just long enough to allow the disk system to create the snapped copy.
