This paper discusses generalized mixed models. The word "Mixed" refers to models with random effects. The word "Generalized" refers to nonnormal distributions for the response variable. Two of the most common distributions are the binary (Y is 1 with probability p and 0 with probability 1-p) and the Poisson. The binary distribution is useful when the outcome of an experiment or survey is a category with 2 levels such as passing or failing a test, being admitted to a hospital or not, germinating or not germinating.
