Identity assurance within the context of information technology has been generally defined as the ability to determine with an acceptable degree of certainty that the individual (identity) presenting himself in identity transactions is who he claims to be. The level of certainty one can have about the associated identity is what is commonly referred to as the "Assurance level." In some cases, the term "Identity Proofing" is used, but this term is more commonly associated with the verification of one's realworld identity during the registration process. An identity transaction itself can be defined as any digital transaction with internal or external systems that require the authentication of the person requesting access.
