Executive Summary

Identity Management is an important concept in today's world. It spans various aspects such as attributed identity, biometric identity, biographic identity and chosen identity. This paper seeks to define concepts related to identity and then discusses the ways to properly manage them. Biometric identity is related to physical attributes such as fingerprints and iris. Attributed identity is related to the social concepts such as name and house address etc. In this way, there are different ways of identifying an entity or an individual. However, there are several limitations to this process. During the last decade, there had been the appearance of terrorist threats. There had been much development in the field of biometric technology for civil identification. Most of the paper trail for identification has been converted to polymer substrate. These substrates contain personal data in a machine readable zone. There also has been emergence of integrated circuits which are readable via radio frequency. These are generally known as Radio Frequency Identification chip. The paper further discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these different technologies. It states that the concept of ID management is still in its infancy. It also discusses the various challenges faced by these new technological measures. It also defines the aims to be accomplished by the future research in the area.
