Implementation of Gigabit Ethernet Standard Using FPGA
This paper presents the results of Gigabit Ethernet standard implementation in the FPGA device. The design uses Altera' s Stratix-II GX device and supports data transfer rates of 10Mbps, 100Mpbs as well as 1Gbps. FPGA implementations have the advantage of altering the functionality of the platform to perform several tasks. The performance of this design is assessed for Gigabit Ethernet using optical fibre as well as Copper media. The Gigabit Ethernet technology is an extension of the 10/100-Mbps Ethernet standard. Gigabit Ethernet provides a raw data bandwidth of 1000 Mbps while maintaining full compatibility with the installed base of over 70 million Ethernet nodes.
