IBM has been involved in production and deployment of virtual machines for over three decades starting in mainframe operating systems and extending into other infrastructure domains as well. This core competence has been extended to high performance servers hosting many types of virtual machines and virtual server systems. Platforms included in IBM's Virtual Machine (VM) and server technology programs today include its System i, System x and System p platform families and its power processor-based servers. IBM Power servers are deployed in multiple enterprise and service provider environments, often in heterogeneous operating systems and application/service designs. They are generally targeted at achieving maximum performance and efficiency in application and data center operations.
