Messaging middleware supports the integration of distributed components of an application by collecting messages from information producers and disseminating applicable messages to interested information consumers. This paper present a flexible new model, the Information Flow Graph (IFG), for specifying and implementing the flow of information in a messaging application. The author's shows that IFGs can be implemented efficiently by reducing them to a form that can exploit efficient multicast technology that has been developed for content-based publish/subscribe systems. Furthermore, the authors describe techniques for using stateful operations in IFGs to derive trends, summaries, and alarms from published events and to automatically generate equivalent sequence of events.
