Integrated User Model in an Adaptive Virtual Learning Environment

Executive Summary

This paper presents an integrated user model which supports the development of an adaptive virtual learning environment. This integrated user model is made up of three dimensions user characteristics, interactions and context which allow one to address three issues in adaptive systems. User characteristics are used to support adaptive paper, the interactions are used to support adaptive activities, and the context is used for device adaptation. In order to attain this level of personalization, a prototype which explores the first dimension has been developed. This prototype uses a multi-agent system to make an existing learning management system (dotLRN) adaptive. E-learning specifications and standards IMS-LD, IMS-QTI, IMS-RDCEO and IEEE/LOM have been used to deal with the interoperability issue.
