The traditional algorithmic approach to computing, supported by structured methods, is increasingly being superseded by the Object-Oriented (OO) approach with its own accompanying methods. The OO approach re-organizes and extends the algorithmic in important ways yielding much power as an abstraction mechanism. While the notion and role of algorithms has relevance in both approaches the perspectives and levels of emphasis are different. The authors believe that the software industry, perhaps understandably so, has generally done a better job at embracing the important contributions of OO technology than academia.
