A Multi-Region Network (MRN), combining a packet-switching layer with an optical circuit-switching one, provides both the bandwidth flexibility and granularity of packet switching - including statistical multiplexing - and the cost-efficiency and high bandwidth capacity of the optical layer. The authors present the implementation and validation of an interlayer traffic engineering architecture based on a hierarchical PCE where the p-PCE is notified of optical layer LSPs which become packet TE links, not requiring full topology visibility. They summarize the architecture, the control plane extensions and its experimental evaluation in a test-bed.
