VMware has released a paper on the configuration options of license server on deployment of VMware vCenter Server 4.0 for managing VMware ESX 3.x or ESXi 3.5 hosts. The basic options include the usage of a solitary license server for vCenter Server 4.0, and use another license server for the ESX 3.x/ESXi 3.5 hosts, usage of a solitary license server for vCenter Server 4.0 along with host based licensing for ESX 3.x/ESXi 3.5 hosts and use of solitary license server for vCenter Server 4.0 along with a different license server for ESX 3.x/ESXi 3.5 hosts. The last option given in the paper is upgrading all hosts to ESX 3.x/ESXi 3.5 without using a license server at all. This configuration enables management of all licenses with vCenter Server 4.0 reporting and license management tools. The paper helps the reader to understand the various typical environmental scenarios faced in a large multi dimensional organization. It gives license server solutions for each of these scenarios and how the VMware products can assist in setting up the various options of deployment. The reader can get valuable information and step by step instructions on the license server requirements on vCenter Server, how to connect a vCenter Server 4.0 to another existing license server, connecting ESX 3.x/ESXi 3.x Hosts to an independent License Server, information on license monitoring and troubleshooting license management systems.
