The authors present a lightpath provisioning scheme that considers impairment information from the physical layer for estimating Quality of Transmission (QoT) and verifies QoT with probe traffic and physical-to network-layer parameters in all-optical networks. End-to-end lightpaths are usually selected by minimizing a certain cost parameter, such as the bandwidth available or the length of the path. Most of the existing Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) algorithms consider that a connection is feasible once an available path and set of wavelengths have been identified.
