Most existing works on Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system with spatially multiplexing focus on the symmetric (M = N) or the over-determined (M >N) systems, where N and M denotes the number of transmit antennas and the number of receive antennas, respectively. However, in many practical scenarios, Under-Determined MIMO (UDMIMO) systems with N >M are preferred over symmetric or over-determined MIMO systems. For instance, the downlink transmission from a base station to a mobile station can usually be modeled as a UD-MIMO system, because a mobile device usually has less antennas than a base station due to the size limitation.
