Executive Summary

The IEEE 802.11 WLAN is the most common technology for indoor broadband wireless access. However it does not guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) for many of the present and forthcoming delay-sensitive applications, such as video chat, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), High definition TV content, mobile TV and Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB). In order to enhance QoS for these applications in the IEEE 802.11, numerous techniques have been designed and proposed. A QoS differentiation method is proposed in for enhancing QoS over 802.11 WLANs. QoS enhancement for real-time video over 802.11 WLANs has been studied and an adaptive measurement-based method is proposed for allocating resources to variable bit rate video. Cross-layer strategies have lately attracted particular attention for QoS improvement over WLANs.
