Making Sense of Cloud Computing

Executive Summary

There are plenty of people talking about cloud computing. Indeed, research firm IDC expects cloud computing spending to reach $42 billion worldwide by 2012. There are several simple reasons for corporate interest: Cloud computing promises to help organizations save money on technology infrastructure and eliminate or reduce some administrative costs - all while giving them the ability to scale usage dynamically and introduce new applications more quickly. From an infrastructure perspective, cloud computing is similar to hosted services in that servers, storage and networking infrastructure are shared across multiple tenants and over a remote connection. Cloud computing is different in that it offers a dynamic pay-per-use model and rapid (and automatic) scaling up or down of resources, unlike hosted services.
