The object-oriented approach provides the best support for the modeling of multimedia data types, structural information and relationships between parts of a document. Support for multimedia data types in relational DBMS requires straightforward and simple extensions to the query language and the data definition part of a DBMS. Whereas the efficient representation of structural and relationship information in the relational model requires new concepts. Providing better access mechanisms for continuous media data it is easier to add to object-oriented databases than relational DBMS. Relational DBMS provide only minimal support for multimedia document storage and cannot handle continuous media data.
