Virtual LANs (VLANs) enable firms to have users share a physical network while logically keeping their traffic separate. They let one virtually segment off one switch so it's one port in many different networks. For this environment a managed switch is absolutely necessary. It can provide the required levels of control, network performance, security and reliability. The only way that one can get traffic from one of those networks to another is to route the traffic. Fundamentally there are two reasons to implement VLANs.
