Heterogeneous wireless networks are created through the integration of numerous independently standardised Radio Access Technologies (RATs). This integration is achieved through the use of interworking network entities such as gateways. This approach to integration does not enable network operators to leverage the full capabilities of their combined radio resources. Reconfigurable Radio Systems (RRSs) provide the means by which numerous different RATs can be implemented on the same hardware platform thereby enabling network operators to jointly manage their combined radio resources. The converged RRS Architecture is a new approach to the development of RRSs as it fully converges the logical components of all RATs into a single architecture.
