Most were running on heavily underutilized server hardware and did important, but not resource intensive, tasks. As the projects unfolded, it became obvious that even with the limited resource workloads, storage management in a virtualized environment was going to be very challenging and require tight interaction between the server and storage groups. Even without server virtualization, storage management is an ongoing challenge for most enterprises. Lack of the ability to know what storage is available, what its utilization rate is, what types of data are consuming storage and how well that data is being protected are all challenges in the environment today.
