MIDI Versus Alternative: The Future of Music Instrument Control

The musical digital interface MIDI is a widely used standard for remotely controlling musical devices and other performance equipment, having established the market dominance within the electronic instrument-sector for over two decades. This paper considers the inherent limitations of the MIDI protocol and seeks to reveal its current status through an analysis of the recent enhancements published by the MIDI Manufacturer Association. It further introduces two specifications -Open Sound Control and MPEG-4 Structured Audio - to examine alternative approaches toward musical instrument control.
