Now that mobile subscriber rates have reached near-saturation levels in many parts of the world, mobile network operators are increasingly looking to data services to fuel future revenue growth. The demand for data is driving network operators to upgrade their networks to Third- and Fourth-Generation (3G and 4G) technologies. To support the new services and future growth, mobile operators are rethinking the way they build their backhaul networks. Data services have dramatically increased the amount of bandwidth that backhaul networks must provide. According to Infonetics Research, one mobile operator saw its busy hour throughput grow exponentially when it began to support data services based on High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA).
