The use of Linux and other non-Windows operating systems by organizations large and small is on the rise. Linux server deployments are expected to increase at nearly four times the rate of Windows deployments over the next five years, fueled by the lower up-front costs Linux offers and its reputation as an adaptable platform for emerging styles of computing. Linux is proliferating on clients as well, due to its suitability for a new generation of portable devices. Though Linux was once considered too insignificant to merit attention as a platform for commercial applications, its increased adoption is, surprisingly, creating new opportunities for .NET developers, thanks to the success of the Mono Project sponsored by Novell.
