Gathering data from various sources, preparing it for modeling, imputing, partitioning, testing various models, choosing the best, presenting it to one's boss, then failure? Data mining is about more than just variables and models. Developing an understanding of each variable may take more than just running some summary statistics and deciding if it is ordinal or nominal. The need for comprehension is even more critical when the data one uses are from different areas of the organization. Putting together a group of subject matter experts in the early phases of a data mining project can make a big difference in the outcome of the project.
