Performance appraisal is more than an assessment of how an employee is performing his duties. Its underlying motive is to find out what an employee has contributed to the organization in the given period and how valuable he is to his organization. Many organizations follow a well-structured and transparent assessment method. They define clearly and inform their employees about the variables in their assessment and what determines their prospects for training, promotions, salary raise and new assignments. But some organizations do not prior intimate their employees about these details. They tacitly or secretly gather information about an employee from various sources at the workplace. To avoid any shocks from performance appraisals, you must do some investigation before signing on the dotted line.
