Executive Summary

Peer-to-peer systems may be used to provide temporary or long-term storage services. Such services are useful in a number of settings. For instance, peer-to-peer systems can be used to process large volumes of data using volunteer computation more recently, by the Boinc infrastructure that supports several computationally intensive research projects. If such computations are performed using MapReduce, information produced by mappers needs to be transferred to the reducers or to intermediate storage. Volunteer storage nodes may not be willing to store data indefinitely, so they have to transfer data to other nodes after serving the system for some time.
