National Grid will soon be 20 years old. Growing out of the Central Electricity Generating Board, it was part of the commanding heights of the British economy which were progressively privatised by the last Conservative government. In 1990 the new, privately owned, Regional Electricity Companies were given ownership of the National Grid Company, which consisted principally of the high-voltage electricity transmission network across the UK. In 1995 the Regional Electricity Companies floated National Grid, and soon dispensed with their interest.
