Executive Summary

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) techniques have become important part of broadband wireless communication system. Several MIMO Space-Time Block Coding (STBC) techniques have been proposed and widely studied during the last 10 - 15 years and different solutions have been adopted in various wireless standards. The optimal STBC design criteria were proposed in the landmark paper by Tarokh et al.. The STBC designs based on the criterion with two transmit antennas results in the celebrated Alamouti design. It is orthogonal, which makes it simple to decode by linear receivers. The simplicity and robustness to various implementation imperfections have made it a standard solution for several practical wireless systems and standards.
