Video compression is one of the most important blocks of an image acquisition system. Compression of video results in reduction of transmission bandwidth. In real time video compression the incoming video data is directly compressed without being stored first. Therefore, real time video compression system operates under stringent timing constraints. Current video compression standards like MPEG, H.26x series, involve emotion estimation and compensation blocks which are highly computationally expensive and hence they are not suitable for real time applications on resource scarce systems.
