Over the past several decades a large body of research has focused on assessing the extent of cheating in academic institutions nationwide, the reasons that drive students to cheat, factors that influence and possibly predict such behavior, and best practices for ensuring the academic integrity of educational programs. These studies suggest that the problem is significant in most educational institutions and may be spreading at alarming rates throughout all levels of education and onto students' later professional lives. Such unethical behavior is difficult to correlate with specific associative variables and may be societal in scope.
