This paper sets out to explore the nature of new organisational and institutional vehicles for managing innovation in order to put research into use for social gain. There no longer remains any doubt that innovation is the means through which societies achieve their economic and social aspirations. The recent understanding of innovation as a process and capacity for change - rather than as a widget-like technological artefact - is having fundamental implications not only for science and technology policy but also for economic and social policy. The focus is no longer just on the creation of new widgets and ideas through research, nor is it on the diffusion of these ideas in society.
