There are approximately 7,000 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) in North America. By their nature, they are the most critical call centers that exist. However, the fact is that most PSAPs are operating on communications systems that are alarmingly outdated; in most cases, the equipment is older than the operator using the equipment. One of the biggest challenges facing industry is the fact that fast moving consumer technology for communicating has outstripped the existing 9-1-1 systems' ability to accept new types of calls to 9-1-1. The existing 9-1-1 system was designed for fixed location wireline phones, and has been stretched and patched over the last 10 years to be able to accept and locate wireless calls from cellular phones.
