Many public safety agencies have evolved their LMR/PMR backhaul from a separate network to support of a converged multi-application, multi-agency WAN. With constrained budgets, this helps increase sharing among cooperating agencies and reduces operations costs by focusing on the management of a single converged network. This paper describes the key WAN technology options for transforming networks for reliable, scalable, efficient support of increasing packet and existing TDM traffic: carrier Ethernet alone or combined with IP/MPLS or packet transport for converged support of public safety, mission-critical and other applications traffic. Information is provided about methods of transporting traffic, priorities for mission-critical traffic, and reliability features, including typical restoration. The paper also highlights key attributes, industry standards and benefits for each option.
