Changes at substations are driving new WAN communications requirements. Deployment of eSCADA, VoIP, smart-metering traffic aggregation and video surveillance is resulting in increasing IP or packet traffic for communications among sites. These new requirements apply to networks that are typically SONET- and PDH-based. This paper describes the key WAN-technology options for transforming networks for reliable, scalable, efficient support of increasing packet and existing TDM traffic: carrier Ethernet alone or combined with MPLS or packet transport for converged support of mission-critical and corporate applications traffic.
