In a given month, 80 percent of Nortel employees access the network remotely through a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Eighteen percent of remotely connected devices are employee-owned computers that aren't managed by Nortel IT. The paper recognized that inadequately-protected computers connecting remotely to the network could be a vector for virus and worm propagation.
