In this paper, the authors investigate strategies for radio power control for wireless sensor networks that guarantee a desired packet error probability. Efficient power control algorithms are of major concern for these networks, not only because the power consumption can be significantly decreased but also because the interference can be reduced, allowing for higher throughput. An analytical model of the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), which is link quality metric, is proposed. The model relates the RSSI to the Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR), and thus provides a connection between the powers and the packet error probability.
