On Regulation of Spectrum Sharing: An Analysis Supporting a Distributed Pilot Channel

Free registration required

Executive Summary

This paper argues in favor of introducing a standardized distributed pilot channel to improve spectrum sharing between heterogeneous technologies in unlicensed and possibly licensed bands with incumbent users. The main features of such a distributed pilot channel are sketched and a simple distributed algorithm for optimization of spectrum sharing is introduced. The pilot channel serves as a supplement to spectrum sensing and can improve spectrum sharing in unlicensed and licensed bands. Wireless devices operating in unlicensed bands, such as devices based on the IEEE 802.11 (WLAN) and the IEEE 802.15 (WPAN) families of standards, have become ubiquitous over the last decade.
