Executive Summary

Version and extensions handling for XML schemas are rather complex issues and unfortunately there is no easy path to take when writing standards based on XML schemas. One needs to make a trade-off between backward and forward compatibility requirements and complexity of the schema. The main problem comes from the XML determinism rule, which the authors briefly explain in this paper. A rather good overview of the issues and potential strategies are given in. this white paper analyzes the XML schema version and extension handling problem and give recommendations for versions and extensions of ONVIF defined schemas.
