Executive Summary

An open plan school, simply defined, is "A school built to a design which does not include self contained classrooms" (Hamilton, 1976). It has a fewer internal doors and walls than a school with traditional classrooms accommodating the same number of students. The open space design, often still used in the business world, was popular for schools in the 1960s and 1970s, especially in North America and Scandinavia though the concept spread around the world.
