In this paper, the authors propose and analyze an Opportunistic Power Allocation (OPA) scheme suitable for decentralized parameter estimation in WSNs. In this scheme, only sensors experiencing favourable channels conditions (i.e., above a channel gain threshold) participate in the estimation process by adjusting their transmit power on the basis of local Channel State Information (CSI). In particular, the authors address a realistic situation where only imperfect (noisy) estimates of the sensor-FC propagation channels are available. They derive a closed-form expression of the channel gain threshold on the basis of statistical CSI only and, subsequently, they define the corresponding power allocation rule.
