Executive Summary

This paper presents a study of the use of Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) cavities in the design of microwave oscillators and their effect on phase noise performance. Harmonic Balance (HB) simulation and ElectroMagnetic (EM) simulation are used to design a 12 GHz feedback oscillator and a 12 GHz reflection oscillator. Prototypes have been implemented and measured in order to investigate the effects of using different SIW cavities on the phase noise performance of oscillator circuits.
