Active Power Filters (APF) are employed for harmonic compensation in power systems. In this paper Genetic Algorithms (GA) are used for the selection of optimum location of Active filters in power system. The purpose of the genetic algorithm is to minimize the cost of harmonic filters and, at the same time, to reach the harmonic limitations defined by standard IEEE-519. This algorithm is applied to 4-bus interconnected network for fixed harmonic load conditions. The control strategies selected to develop objective function are total harmonic distortion of voltage and current, telephone interference factor of voltage and current, harmonic transmission line loss and active filter current.
