CCTV and surveillance systems are, today, going through the same transformation so many other industries did before: digitization. Initiated in the early 1990's with the introduction of digital components in both video cameras and recorders, IP surveillance has grown steadily while becoming fully digitized. IP surveillance is now the prime option for video surveillance and monitoring. While IP Surveillance holds several advantages over the previous generations of CCTV and surveillance systems, a few obstacles remain. Some, such as network bandwidth and latency, are well known. But other hurdles are less understood by end users and system integrators. This paper focuses on one of them: The IP Decoding Bottleneck.
