Overcoming the limits of TCP on High-Speed WANS
Today's IT Organization rely heavily on Wide-Area Networks (WANs) for application performance and data protection. Key to meeting these goals is the behavior of TCP, the underlying protocol used by most business applications, which must be able to utilize the WAN link completely. It is well known, however, that the effectiveness of TCP drops dramatically as the distance between endpoints increase and/or the quality of the WAN link drops. This paper reviews the causes of poor TCP performance on high-speed WAN links, and explains why adding more bandwidth cannot solve the issue.
