Next Generation Networks (NGN) aims at providing a richer set of multimedia experience to its subscribers. It is anticipated that these potential services will use multicast or broadcast as their preferred transmission mode. In Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) networks this support is provided by the introduction of Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS). The objective of the European ICT project C-MOBILE is to enhance MBMS support in 3G and beyond-3G systems at both the radio access and core network level. This paper concentrates on packet scheduling at the radio access level. It illustrates the key concepts that have been selected to efficiently transport MBMS traffic to its subscribers by using a light weight feedback mechanism at the common control channel to provide power control.
